Those Who Are Happiest…
…are those who do the most for others.
What do you think of this quote from Booker T. Washington: Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others?
In my opinion, it is generally true. Serving others helps us take our mind off our woes. When we serve we feel the joy of helping others. When we help others, we feel magnanimous, noble, benevolent—all wonderful feelings.
But what does the Bible say? While not being a direct biblical quote, there are many verses with the general idea that loving and serving others brings joy:
“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35 ESV)
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV)
“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13-14 NLT)
“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” (Proverbs 11:25 ESV)
“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38 ESV)
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” (Proverbs 19:17 ESV)
