…be someone who cares more. -Unknown

In a world full of people who couldn’t care less, we can be the people who care more. Sometimes it may seem like the world is growing colder and darker, but as Christians, it is our joy to care for others and to do so sacrificially.

This is a guest post by Beth Harris. She is a wife, mother, Bible study leader and volunteer editor for markalanwilliams.net.

Honestly, before I accepted Christ in my 20’s, I couldn’t care less about others, because I was

too busy taking care of myself. But now I’m grateful that the Lord helps me to care about others, and to be part of a church and multiple ministries that care and share the love of Christ.

One of the ways that my church demonstrates care is by feeding the homeless. Twice each

month, I am part of a team that cooks and serves dinner for two homeless shelters in our

community.

Since this is November, I felt like God wanted me to do something I’ve never done before and

cook a turkey. Not just one but two turkeys—to share with the needy! I watched many YouTube videos and read many articles to prepare myself. But, after the recommended amount of time, they were both still undercooked. In a panic, I prayed and searched the internet for help. I found an article that suggested carving them and continuing to cook them with broth and gravy. They turned out fine and my faith grew as I trusted the Lord. It feels so good to care for others and share the love of Christ.

With recent headlines of mass shootings and hate crimes on the rise, it would seem like the world is full of people who couldn’t care less. But, as Christians, we don’t want to imitate the behavior of the world, nor do we want to allow others who do wrong to influence our way of living. We want to imitate God and let Him change the way we think.

Romans 12:2 says, “Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (NLT)

instruction manual for living. Christians should especially demonstrate care and love in action that effects positive change in the world. That includes care for those in our immediate sphere of influence and others living abroad, all in Christ’s Name.

  • Ephesians 5:1-2 says, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2  Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” (NLT)

  • Colossians 3:12 says, “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” (NLT)

In a world full of broken families, Christians are to care for our own relatives. Then we are to care for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • 1 Timothy 5:8 says, “But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.” (NLT)

  • Galatians 6:2 says, “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” (NLT)

  • Philippians 2:4 says, “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” (NLT)

  • Romans 12:13 says, “When God's people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” (NLT)

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:9-10 NLT)

In a world full of people who are in need, Christians are to shine for Jesus.

  • Matthew 5:16 says, “You are the light of the world--like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (NLT)

  • Matthew 25:35-36 says, “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.

  • Isaiah 58:10 says, “Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.” (NLT)

first it is impossible, then it is difficult, then it is done. —James Hudson Taylor

Every great work of God has three stages. First, it seems like it is impossible, then it is difficult and then it is done.

James Hudson Taylor (21 May 1832 – 3 June 1905) was a British Protestant Christian

missionary to China and founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM, now OMF

International). Taylor spent 51 years in China. The society that he began was responsible

for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country who began 125 schools and directly

resulted in 18,000 Christian conversions, as well as the establishment of more than 300

stations of work with more than 500 local helpers in all eighteen provinces. Wikipedia

Every great work of God first seems impossible. If someone would have told me that God would use me to connect with people from all over the world to help them grow in their faith; I would have thought it was impossible. But, that is exactly what happened, since I became an online missionary for Global Media Outreach, 8 years ago. God has used me to disciple, encourage and pray with others from all over the world on every continent, except Antartica. To date I have helped almost 700 people and received nearly 1,000 replies.

Recently, I’ve also been given the privilege to volunteer with Discipleship Journeys With Jesus in an online help desk capacity. Their vision is to take 100 million people on a disicpleship journey with Jesus. It’s a blessing to be used by God to connect with more people all over the world, answer questions, and send messages of encouragement and prayer.

A God-sized work requires faith in Him to accomplish the task. God specializes in doing the

impossible, but our part is to trust and obey Him. In addition, every great work of God requires time, effort and prayer. Every great work of God requires our commitment and it can be difficult. But before we know it, the great work of God is done, all by His grace and power.

Every great work of God has three stages. First it seems impossible as He may give us

opportunities to do things for Him that are impractical, outrageous and unrealistic to us and

others. But we live by faith and not by sight.

What is humanly impossible; is possible with God.

Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible." (Matthew 19:26 NLT)

We may feel unqualified like Moses when asked to accomplish tasks that seem impossible.

In Exodus 3:9-10; God told Moses: “I have indeed heard the cry of my people, and I see how the Egyptians are oppressing them. Now I am sending you to the king of Egypt so that you can lead my people out of his country.” (GNT)

Moses was hesitant as Exodus 3:11 indicates, “But Moses said to God, ‘I am nobody. How can I go to the king and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’” (Exodus 3:11 GNT)

“God answered, ‘I will be with you, and when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will

worship me on this mountain. That will be the proof that I have sent you.’” (Exodus 3:12 GNT)

When God uses people to accomplish the impossible, He gets the glory!

Secondly, every great work of God is difficult, but if it’s truly His will and work, He will be with us. Serving God takes patience and sometimes circumstances get worse and our faith is tested. His timing is usually different from ours and we have to wait patiently. We have to let God lead and not go ahead of Him.

Moses discovered this to be true when even though God promised to deliver the Israelites, it

didn’t happen immediately. In fact, Pharaoh didn’t release the Israelites in response to Moses’ request and he withheld the straw needed for them to make the bricks. They had to supply their own straw and still meet the same quota (Exodus 5:6-9).

This was difficult and discouraging. In Exodus 5:22-23 we see Moses’ response: “Moses

returned to the LORD and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” (NIV)

When things are difficult, we often need to return to the promises in God’s Word to strengthen our faith and receive reassurance from Him, so we don’t give up.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.” (Exodus 6:1 NIV)

Eventually, every great work of God that He wants completed will get done, because no one can stop His plans.

After ten plagues, Pharaoh finally agreed to let the Israelites go, but God hardened Pharaoh’s

heart, so that he and his army began to pursue them afterwards (Exodus 14:5-9).

The people were frightened and looked to Moses for help and Moses looked to God.

Exodus 14:13 says, “Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.’” (NIV)

God parted the Red Sea and the Israelites passed through safely on dry ground, but the Egyptians who followed drowned as the walls of water came crashing back down over them (Exodus 14:15-31).

Is God using you to do a great work for Him?

God will waste nothing. –Phillips Brooks

Give your past to God and let Him make a future out of it through Jesus Christ. He uses broken and redeemed sinners, and their past mistakes to work for their good and His glory. He will waste nothing.

I wanted to get rid of my past and through Jesus Christ I did. Almost 30 years ago, my life was out of control and I was making increasingly sinful choices. I’d heard that Jesus died for my sins, but I thought I had sinned too much for Him to forgive me.

I begin to notice Christians in my workplace and their purity; and I wanted to be like them. So, one Sunday on New Year’s Day, I attended a Christian church and I heard a message that just as people look forward to a new year for a clean slate, I could have a clean slate through Christ. I could be forgiven because of Jesus’ death on the cross and have eternal life; if I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. I went home and prayed to receive Him.

Since accepting Christ, God has brought good out of my past, because He has used it to give me great empathy for others and to offer hope to those who are struggling, hurt and broken.

You can get rid of your past: your past regrets, disappointments, failures and guilt; by making peace with God (Romans 5:1).

Whether we have only sinned a little or a lot, we all need forgiveness, because we all have sinned; and even one sin is too much for a holy God (Romans 3:23).

Jesus shed His blood for our sins when He died on the cross to satisfy God’s justice and take our punishment; so that we could receive the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23), (Romans 5:8). Then 3 days later, Jesus rose from the dead. He is God’s only plan for our salvation (Acts 4:12).

You can do as I did, 30 years ago and admit that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Ask God to forgive you for your sins and pray to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10), (Acts 10:13).

You can have a fresh start and a new life in Christ. You can become a new person today by receiving Him. Your past can be healed!

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT)

No matter what you’ve done, God can forgive you and give you a future in Christ.

There is nothing you or I can do to earn salvation. It is a gift from God and by grace alone, and through faith alone in Jesus Christ, and His death and resurrection.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (NIV)

He will waste nothing. God is incredibly resourceful and transforms broken lives into those that are beautiful to behold and useful for His Kingdom. He can turn your mess into a message of His love and grace.

Believers have God’s promise that He will cause everything to work together for good, including the past; for those who love Him and are called by Him.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (Romans 8:28 NLT)

Getting rid of your past doesn’t mean that you won’t have negative consequences from poor decisions made or that everything that happens in life will always be wonderful. Christians have trials and difficulties in life.

Would you like to get rid of your past and embrace the future God has for you?
