We Make Our Decisions…

…and then our decisions turn around and make us.

Recently I was talking with a former member of my second church plant. She recalled a time 20 years ago when I asked several times for prayer about an important decision. She had no idea what it was at the time.

Now she reflects and thinks that it was probably the decision to become a full-time missionary. She said, “That was such a great decision because it has impacted so many people.” I thanked her heartily for her affirmation.

Seems like there are at least 2 kinds of decision makers:

• Fast and furious

• Slow and careful

I tend to be in the second category. One of the reasons I am so careful when making major decisions is because of the truth of this quote by Reverend F. W. Boreham:

We make our decisions and then our decisions turn around and make us.

But is this a biblical concept? I think so based on Scriptures such as the following which indicate that in the case of our decision about salvation there are literally eternal consequences:

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13 ESV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:16-18 ESV)

“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15 ESV)

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ Let anyone who hears this say, ‘Come.’ Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.” (Revelation 22:1 NLT)

Bottom line: Decisions are very important because our decisions turn around and make us, especially our salvation decision.

Note from Jesus words that if we don’t decide to follow Christ, the default is not neutral. It says, “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:18 ESV)

Grace Is A Stamp That Says Ransomed…

…on a life that screams ruined.

Do you feel like your life is over, washed up, ruined?

You need God’s grace. It can turn a life completely around—which has happened so many times before:

“Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NLT)

Those verses are all about grace. Messed up lives that are “cleansed, made holy, made right with God.”
