Do both the Bible and Koran say to kill infidels? Some suggest the answer is yes. You can easily find websites which confirm this. This podcast question comes from a show on CNN which said that both the Bible and Koran instruct adherents to kill infidels. How do we answer this question? We go right to the Bible and Koran and honestly look at what they both say.

ree

Two websites I read said that Jesus was teaching his followers to kill infidels when he said:

Those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them, bring them here and kill them in front of me.” (Luke 19:27)

What’s preposterous about this accusation is that Jesus was simply quoting a nobleman in a story. This is easily discernable if you look at Luke 19.

What if I were to say; “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

If I said that, you wouldn’t say “Mark said something brilliant.” You’d say “Mark is quoting Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.”

Those two websites were doing what so many others are trying to do: deceive people into thinking that the Bible says something that it doesn’t.

In this podcast I take an honest look at both the Bible and the Koran regarding the teaching to kill infidels.

But if you don’t believe me, I challenge you to simply look at who the terrorists and oppressors are today. It is not Christians, it is Muslims who are committing terrorist acts; kidnapping, beheading, murdering, subjecting to slavery, even sexual slavery and so on.

Are all Muslims terrorists? Certainly not! But while not all Muslims are terrorists, most terrorists are Muslims.

Why is this so? Because they follow the teaching of the Koran.

Listen to this podcast to hear the passages of the Koran they follow.

On the other hand, Christians do an astounding amount of charitable work to relieve human suffering. Here are two articles that dig into this fact:

What motivates Christians to do so much good for fellow human beings is the teaching of Jesus and the Bible:

Matthew 5:44 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you

Romans 12:18 “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live in peace with EVERYONE.”

Romans 12:20 “If your enemy is hungry feed him; if he is thirsty give him something to drink.”

1 Corinthians 4:12-13 teaches: “When we are cursed, we bless, when we are persecuted we endure it, when we are slandered we answer kindly.”

1 Peter 3:9 “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing…”

This week’s podcast is unique for two reasons. First, the question, “Is it right to pray to Mary?” comes from a Question and Answer session at my home church. It was recorded live at New Song Community Church in Oceanside, CA. Pastor Hal Seed and I were answering the questions posed to us live that day.

ree

The second thing that is different is that there since the question was answered quickly, we had enough time to include a couple of other questions and answers in this podcast.

Those two other questions were:

What should I do when a Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormon comes knocking on my door—what should I say?

Why do some Bibles omit certain verses that are included in other versions? (Hal and I recorded an entire podcast on this topic which you can listen to HERE.)

Here are some of the verses that are cited in this podcast that help answer if it is right to pray to Mary:

In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1 ESV)

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5 KJV)

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8-9 KJV)

While Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, she was only a virgin until Jesus was born. This is clearly taught in Matthew 1:25: “And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.” (KJV)

After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.” (John 2:12 ESV)

So his brothers said to him, ‘Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.’ For not even his brothers believed in him.” (John 7:3-5 ESV)

Please note that Catholicism, Orthodoxy and some others teach that part of the reason we can pray to Mary is because of her “perpetual virginity.” She is called the “eternal virgin.” But alas, the Bible teaches that she had other children conceived in the normal way through Joseph. The verses above and others make this clear.

This is particularly true of Matthew 1:25 which says:

But he [Joseph] did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.” (NLT)

The bottom line: It is good to honor Mary for her special role in delivering the Lord Jesus. But it is wrong to pray to Mary, worship her or ascribe to her any other role that is more than the role God has revealed to us in the Bible.

Unchain it and it will defend itself. -C. H. Spurgeon

Charles H. Spurgeon talked about the need to defend the Bible in this quote. He lived in the 1800’s. Back then, as today, the Bible is attacked, criticized, misquoted, and defamed.

ree

What’s people’s problem with the Bible? Mark Twain perhaps answered that question best when he said, “It’s not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that bother me. It’s the parts I dounderstand.”

In other words, the Bible is a powerful force. As it says of itself: “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” (Hebrews 4:12 NLT)

People don’t want to be exposed by it, obey it, give an account for living according to its words and submit to it. Therefore, they attack.

In the writings on this website, I seek to answer honest questions about the Bible.

I have written about why we can trust the Bible, follow the Bible’s teaching, and believe it.

But many don’t ask honest questions, they just want to attack. For those people, the response is Spurgeon is the best: “ Defend the Bible! I would as soon defend a lion!”
