What Does The Bible Say About Euthanasia?

This question on euthanasia comes from listeners in Canada. They tell me there is a huge debate about this subject there. Of course, this issue is being debated and laws are being changed in the USA and elsewhere as well. But what does the Bible say about euthanasia?

Proponents of euthanasia use terms like “death with dignity,” “right to die” and “mercy killing.”

Does God favor these ideas?

Here are some of the verses related to euthanasia that are cited in this podcast:

“I would rather be strangled—     rather die than suffer like this. I hate my life and don’t want to go on living.     Oh, leave me alone for my few remaining days.” (Job 7:15-16 NLT)

“And he [Elijah] asked that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.’” (1 Kings 19:4b ESV)

“Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13)

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” (Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT)

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27 ESV)
