How Can I Hear God’s Voice?

How can I hear God’s voice? This question stumped me for years. Today the answer is much clearer.

One of the key passages that helped me figure out this issue is this:

“And he [the Lord] said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” (1Kings 19:11-12 KJV)

Another encouraging passage is James 1:5, “If you need wisdom — if you want to know what God wants you to do — ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking.” (NLT)

Jesus said; “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

The Christian Does Not Think That God Will Love Us Because We Are Good…

…but that God will make us good because He loves us.

“The Christian does not think that God will love us because we are good but that God will make us good because He loves us.”

This wonderful quote from C. S. Lewis really captures the concept of salvation in Christianity. Our salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)

Notice salvation is “not your own doing.” There is nothing we can do to “earn” our salvation.

Unfortunately, many people think they have to be “good enough” to become a Christian. But that is a contradiction of clear Biblical teaching.

Christians aren’t Christians because they are “good.” They are made good by God who continually works in us to make us better.

Even the great Apostle Paul admitted, “chief of sinners.”

The 3 writers who wrote more of the Bible than any others were all murderers! Moses, David and Paul. What a great illustration of the fact that:

“We are all infected and impure with sin.

    When we display our righteous deeds,

    they are nothing but filthy rags.”

(Isaiah 64:6a NLT)

All are sinners and Christianity alone offers complete hope for all. 

Someone put it this way: “All other religions are ‘do.’ Christianity is ‘done.’”

Do you get the picture? He died for our sins because we cannot be good enough to “earn” heaven.

It is totally wrong to think that God will love us because we are good.

Pride makes many dislike this and keeps many from heaven. We want to “earn our way.” But that is not possible according to the Bible.

Is God there, but silent? Or does God still speak today? If God is speaking, how does He do it?

In this podcast I tackle the question: Does God still speak today?

The answer is “yes” and I give six ways we can hear God still speak. Some of them might be a surprise to you, yet all are biblical. 

Before listening to the podcast, how many ways God speaks can you think of?

Here are some hints—some of the passages I refer to in the podcast:

“From the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly observed in what he made. As a result, people have no excuse.” (Romans 1:20 GW) 

“Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God’s approval.” (2 Timothy 3:16 GW)

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” (Hebrews 1:1-4 ESV)
