"Christianity Questions and Answers" podcast CQA 041
A friend read on the internet that cremation is a pagan practice. The article said that it is not biblically permissible for Christians. He wrote and asked me to address the question: Is cremation biblically permissible?
This is an increasingly prevalent issue in the United States. According to Wikipedia. “The cremation rate in the United States has been increasing steadily with the national average rate rising from 3.56% in 1960 to 40.62% in 2010.”
Wikipedia also states that “Japan has one of the highest cremation rates in the world with the country reporting a cremation rate of 99.85 percent in 2008.”
India’s cremation rate is about 85%.The UK is about 73%.Canada about 68%.
What does Scripture say? While not specifically addressing cremation as right or wrong, it does say this:
“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19 NIV)
